Port Douglas – History of a Fishing Village

There is always time for a little reflection be it from the sun or sea or our interesting history…..Strolling around Port Douglas today it is hard to imagine that it was once a wild frontier town filled with itinerant seamen and gold prospectors. The sleepy little village which still remembers its roaring days is now filled with cosmopolitan cafes, boutiques and well-heeled shoppers who insist on paying a visit to as many of Port’s famous restaurants and fashionable stores as possible. There is a definite unreality and aloofness about Port Douglas these days, but is that not the ideal escape for the tourists’ otherwise dreary life in the big smoke.Situated only 60 odd kms north of Cairns, Port Douglas was first established in 1877 when Christie Palmerston cut a road through the rainforest and down the mountain range.Born as Cristofero Palmerston Carandini in Victoria, Palmerston was one of those iconic characters who occupy the fascinating early history of the then undiscovered Far North Queensland, Australia.Allegedly Palmerston headed for Far North Queensland in 1873 to join the Palmer River gold rush. However his fame came to him with the Hodgkinson River goldrush, when the track he cut from those goldfields to Port Douglas was his first.Palmerston’s track was known affectionately as ‘The Bump’.In the early days the settlement at Port Douglas was known as Island Point, Terrigal, Port Owen and Salisbury. With the latter title derived from Lord Salisbury, the British Prime Minister at the time, this name went by the way after a visit by government officials who changed the town’s name in honour of the then Queensland Premier – John Douglas. An amazing collection of historic photographs can be viewed at both The Newport on Macrossan and with cocktail in hand at the restored Court House Hotel on the corner of Macrossan Street and Wharf Street. See a taste of the history of Port Douglas.Dive north this October for a little reflection in Port Douglas before the big wetseason which is due to arrive anytime between December 2005 through to March 2006.Within weeks of its establishment the town was booming. There were an estimated 50 tent pubs, a bakery, a general store and rough accommodation. People poured in on their way to the diggings. By mid-1878 there were 21 permanent hotels and a local newspaper, the town had been surveyed, lots of land were for sale, and the mail was being delivered from Port Douglas to Thornborough on the goldfields. Early the following decade the town had a population of 8000 and had overtaken Cairns as the most important port on the north Queensland coast.Just like its rise Port’s decline was rapid. The gold started to run around 1886 and the miners moved on to Papua and New Guinea.Port Douglas, however, remained the port for the sugar mill at Mossman until 1958.Today the sugar cane comprises a shrinking part of the district. The majority of the land has been or is in the process of being subdivided to make way for the demand in “lifestyle blocks” and residential housing. Recently released to the market is the land at Cooya Beach aptly named “Cane”. With prices starting at $115,750 these property allotments could be referred to as – never to be seen again prices!!

Vacation Packages, What Should You Look For In A Vacation Package?

Vacation packages come in many different shapes and styles. Whether you are looking for a world cruise, cheap vacation packages or romantic honeymoon vacations, there is an itinerary that is perfect for your wants and needs. Decide first where you will travel since this will be the hardest and the most important decision of all.If you are thinking about booking a cruise vacation package, whether it is for a short trip or long, think about what time of year has the best climate. If you live in a cold weather climate during the winter then a trip to the Caribbean toward the end of January might be a dream come true. Mediterranean cruises are popular during the spring and summer months and, here again, you can enjoy the sun and no crowds if you travel before June. The most important thing to look for when browsing the many vacation packages will be the itineraries and what they offer the traveler. If you want to spend time at a beach somewhere drinking margaritas then a trip focused around culture and history will not be for you. On the other hand, many people nowadays are really beginning to enjoy experiential travel where they can become at one with their chosen destination.Taking advantage of vacation packages during a shoulder season is a great way to save money on both airfare and accommodations. Since most people tend to travel in the summer or around the holidays, pick some dates that are right before or right after these busy times. You won’t be sorry since this will give you a good chance to visit sites when they are least crowded and eat and drink for the off season rates after the busy tourist season.Looking for Romantic Vacation Packages? If you are looking for romantic vacation packages then think about destinations where you can enjoy long sunsets or warm cozy fires. For the winter, there is nothing better than curling up in front of a blazing fireplace with a glass of wine and some good music. Activities during the day can include skiing and snowboarding and in the evening, theater or candlelit dinners can be the norm. For sunny destinations couples should head to Hawaii or the Caribbean. The Caribbean is so popular for putting together honeymoon packages that just about any island offers some sort of honeymoon special. If you decide to get married on the island, be sure and find out the rules and regulations for obtaining your marriage license.Vacation packages should speak to everyone on the trip,

they should be about everyone on the trip having a good time. A snorkeling trip won’t be fun if you are the only person in your family who snorkels. A relaxing sun-filled vacation won’t be enjoyable for the type-A personality who needs to be moving around.Tips for a Successful Vacation Package:1) Brainstorm with your loved ones or loved one and come up with the top 3 destinations or types of vacation.2) Once you have chosen your location, use the search engines to find a website that provides all the information you need.3) The search engines have clearly become the best way to find information. Conduct searches for the location you would like to visit. Search for specifics: Ammenities, shopping, weather, style of trip, length of time, etc.4) Find a company that specializes in providing vacation packages. Ask to speak with an experienced travel agent and pre-qualify them once you have got one on the line.4) Ask them if they have been to the location you would like to visit.Golden Rule:There are so many great Travel Agents out there. Once you have found one that you can connect with, give them your business. Most travel agents absolutely love what they do and are passionate about their business. Their enthusiasm will carry over into the planning of your trip and equate to one of the best vacations you have ever had.Happy Hunting! The world is a beautiful place with an adventure around every corner.

Is a Relaxing Vacation the Impossible Dream?

While traveling on the Metroliner from a wonderful and relaxing trip seeing friends in Washington, DC, I realized how difficult it is for some many business owners and executives to take a vacation. Is the thought of a relaxing vacation an impossible dream? As a sole practitioner, I have learned that if I do not stop and smell the roses, enjoy my family and have some fun, I will be sabotaging not only my career but also my life.Vacations and days off are an important part of any career plan. They allow you to think a bit differently and find that balance you need. Colleagues and clients also perceive you as a person who not only recognizes a need for balance but also is not a control freak.I believe it’s really possible to leave the office both mentally and physically. It just takes a bit of planning and some very deep breathing.Be PreparedLook at your schedule for upcoming projects and deadlines. Try to take care of as much as you can before your trip and allow for emergencies when you get back. Schedule upcoming meetings and projects on your calendar early, so that you are not rushed when you return. I often create a To Do List and use different folders so that when I return from a trip, things are as organized as they can be. By being prepared, you will be able to put your project’s aside and enjoy your trip.DelegateDetermine well in advance who will be taking care of your responsibilities while you are away. Ensure he or she has the information needed to answer questions and that if decisions must be made, what the appropriate comfort level is. For me, I have an administrative office that handles any emergencies for me. It’s a lifesaver. I know that my clients are speaking to real people who can help move the issue toward a successful resolution. If you don’t have an administrative office, speak to a few call centers in your area. If nothing else, your clients will hear a real voice and know that the message will be taken.Notify Your ClientsTell your clients in advance that you will be traveling. If you normally respond to email and phone messages within an hour, your clients need to know that you will not be readily available. If they know when you will be back and who to contact, emergencies are not as drastic and they will be able to gauge the level of importance. Be sure to give the same information on vacation emails and voicemails (office and cell.)Extra ProtectionIf you are able to schedule a quiet day in the office for yourself, before your official return, do so. By telling clients that you will be back on Tuesday, when you will really be in the office Monday, allows you to answer those emails and return some of your calls without the stress of being rushed.Being ConnectedIf you must be connected and check in with your office, either by phone or email, I suggest taking care of things every few days and in the morning or very late afternoon. Remember, you are on vacation and balance is important.Relax & Day DreamBring books and magazines that are not related to your business. Vacations allow us to think about things we never would have dream of. Last December, while on vacation sitting in the sun in Bonaire, I thought of a fabulous idea for my business. After a few short minutes of thought, I decided to give it a try. I credit the success of that idea and successes in my business to the fact I was on vacation.I wish you all a wonderful and relaxing summer vacation!

The Cheapest Days and Times to Book Your Vacation

We all need a vacation now and again and heading to an exotic island or a snow covered mountain might be just what the doctor ordered. However, the high prices of vacation getaways generally keep the majority of the population at home or taking the same boring vacation year after year. However, did you know that you can book the vacation of your dreams and save a lot of money? That is right, all you have to do is check on your dream vacation package and book it on the cheapest days for that destination, and you will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Where will you find this information? Online, of course! The Off SeasonEvery destination has an off season, or a period of the year when prices go down. The off season might be due to the weather or the flux of tourists, but regardless there are off season rates for whatever destination you are considering. What you need to do to find off season rates is learn when the off season is for your particular vacation destination. This is generally very easy and all you need to do is check online. In fact, there are many websites for hotels, airlines, tour operators and the like in your vacation destination that will tell you up front the high season and low season rates. Then, you can simply determine what dates during the off season you would like to travel and book your vacation. You will save a significant amount of money and enjoy the vacation with less tourists, more hotel attention, and will love the fact that you chose to travel in the off season. Many individuals have a poor conception of off season travel because they believe it is a bad time to visit the specific location and they won’t enjoy that particular vacation during the off season. This is not necessarily the case and many times the high season is determined by when the tourists show up in hoards. For example, June through August is high season at most beaches in the United States, however this is considered off season for parts of South America and their beaches. Of course, down south the sun is still shining and the weather beautiful, but hotel rates and even airline rates are considerably lower. Because of this, when you want to take a great vacation figure out your budget, do a little research, and before you know it you will find the off season rates for the destination of your dreams that you can finally afford!

Things I ALWAYS Tuck Away in My Travel Vest and Suitcase When I Travel

Its so easy! All you need are a couple handy items and traveling is a breeze. Here are my top 6 tips for packing your suitcase:1 – A small electric hot water heater (Mine looks like a extension cord with a large paperclip at one end) and a few packets of hot chocolate, or if you prefer tea or coffee. Instant soup packets are a winner too.2 – A net bag for dirty clothes and a few zip-lock bags for wet items. I also pack anything that could leak in a zip bag.. I stuff my socks into my shoes, pop them in a zip bag so other clothing does not get any dirt that happens to be on the soles.3 – I roll all garments so they can fit in the corners of the suitcase. I don’ t like creases where garments have been folded.4 – After I pack my bag, I weigh it on the bathroom scale. If it is over 20 pounds, I begin to figure what I can do without. 20 pounds is all I care to carry, unless I am going to fly and check the bag at the airport.5 – On the label on the outside of your suitcase, put only your name and note your address is on the inside of the case.. Put your address and name on the inside on top of your clothes. Be sure to include where you are going and where you are staying and a list of contents. So if your case gets mis-routed or lost they can find you. Then your suitcase can catch up with you. Do not put any valuables in the suitcase if you are checking it.6 – It doesn’t matter how one travels, it just seems the smart thing to do to carry valuables and necessities with you at all times…..as in a travel vest..

Dental Implants : Dental Tourism : Save & Enjoy

Dental Tourism is a budding concept for a planned vacation along with total Dental solution and care. Health problems and treatment are very costly in most of the European and American countries compared to this part of the world. We provide excellent package to meet your treatment expenditure and at the same time guide you to spend the vacation. You can enjoy your holidays and receive services related to Dentistry such as Dental Implants at a very affordable price.A dentist can charge $300 to $400 for a Dental Filling in USA & Europe. It costs only $20 to $40 in India. A Root Canal is $1,500 in the West but only $100 to $200 in India. Dentures can cost $1000 overseas but only $200 in India.Dentistry is a growing industry with 13,000 practicing dentists in the US. However, at the same time it is not affordable by average citizens due to the expensive Dental Care Services. Dental treatment is generally not reimbursed by the National Health Schemes of some countries and is too expensive. The difference in charge of a Dentist from US to India is worth a thought. That is why India has recently become a major tourist hub of Dental Care Solutions. You can have your tooth fixed and make your holidays memorable at the same time or simply, enjoy the different hues of Mystic India and get the Dental treatment done without getting a hole in your pocket.”Buying Expensive things make you feel bad once only, but the bitterness of poor quality lingers long, even after the sweetness of low cost is forgotten” – Dr. William DickersonIn spite of low cost, you are still getting Quality Treatment in India primarily due to low labor cost as compared to any other region in world viz. Eleuthera – Nice and Skinny

Out of the many Caribbean and Bahamian islands my wife and I have visited, Eleuthera is by far the longest and skinniest island we have seen — it is also one of the nicest. At approximately 100 miles long and a several miles wide, Eleuthera offers a rare combination of beauty, charm, ruggedness and tranquility. Within an hour’s time, you can view the deep blue color of the Atlantic from towering coral cliffs, wade in the rich turquoise waters looking for seashells, or go spelunking in a cave filled with multicolored stalactites and stalagmites.Even better, Eleuthera has miles and miles of pink sand beaches that will simply knock your eyes out. Does this sound like an exaggeration? Trust me, it’s not. These are the same type of pink sand beaches you would find at the fabled, and expensive, Harbour Island which is located just off the northeast tip of Eleuthera. These beaches were also good enough for Club Med at one time — that was until hurricane Floyd in 1999 destroyed the facilities. Club Med chose not to rebuild and packed their bags. The nice thing is the beach is still there and is as gorgeous as ever. Even nicer is the fact there are so few people there making it by far one of the most pristine and tranquil beaches we have seen. And then there is the charm of Eleuthera. Unlike some of the Bahamian islands we have seen, Eleuthera is not over developed — if anything it is underdeveloped. You get the feeling of time and endurance as you tour the island. One of the more historical places to visit is Preacher’s Cave on the north end of Eleuthera. This cave is where Captain William Sayles and a group of Puritans sought shelter after finding the island. The cave and surrounding area is currently being turned into a historical park. At the entrance of the old cave is a large rock with a plaque that says “William Sayle ship wrecked at Devil’s Backbone found refuge here. Sermons held 100 years.” When standing in the cave, the presence of the adventurers’ spirits is palatable. With any number of the towns on Eleuthera, such as Governor’s Harbour, you can see the effect the ocean has had on so many of the historical homes and buildings. It kind of reminds you of what it is like to walk down the street of an old Western town; only the motif is stone and sand surrounded by water. Of course, there are some more modern facilities, but not near enough to take away from the overall atmosphere. You definitely won’t find Whoppers being served here. From the quaint Bahamian towns to the hard packed pink sand beaches, we then visit “The Cliffs” of Eleuthera and we learn a new term: “rogue waves”. Imagine standing on a virtually sheer cliff a hundred plus feet above the ocean and watching the water pound on the rock face below. You feel perfectly safe and removed from the ocean’s display of brute force… that is until a rogue wave hits the cliff wall and jumps up over your head dumping hundreds of gallons of sea water on you and your poor camera. This is immediately followed with a scream “What was that?” Since there are no reefs to break the water coming into the cliffs, the right wave breaking at the right angle produces a water show that even the Bellagio can not match. When staying on an island like Eleuthera, we prefer renting vacation homes or villas. There is a wide variety of vacation rentals; some considered “luxury” while others are “basic and affordable”. Many of these house and villa rentals can be rented directly from their property owners — a number of which have their own websites on the internet. You may also seek the assistance of a local real estate agent. When looking for that perfect rental home, it is a good idea to ask to see photos, get a detailed description of the rental property, and find out exactly where it is located so you know what is in its proximity. Be sure to ask about their deposit and refund policies.Eleuthera Island is ideal for any number of typical island activities including fishing for bonefish, surfing, shelling, kayaking, boating, diving, snorkeling and swimming. Did I forget to mention lying in a lounge chair sitting under a beach umbrella and sipping a cold Kalik? Make mine Eleuthera, please.Copyright © 2005 Perry Joseph
